Welcome to Sierra County New Mexico - where the Old Frontier Meets the Final Frontier!
Prior to the arrival of Spaceport America - which will soon offer commercial space flights from its location 24 miles southeast of Truth or Consequences - Sierra County was mostly known for its two lakes, Elephant Butte and Caballo, as well as for Truth or Consequences' hot springs and historic communities including Hillsboro, Monticello, Chloride and Lake Valley.
But Sierra County is also a land of wide open spaces - the 2000 Census counted 3.2 people per square mile - and beautiful scenery that varies from desert to grasslands to mountainous regions. Elevations range from approximately 4400' in Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences to more than 6000' in Kingston. Portions of the Aldo Leopold WIlderness Area and the Gila National Forest are within our boundaries, making Sierra County an ideal place to experience nature.
